“Lush Lands,” a collection of new landscape paintings by Georgeanne Gaffney, will be on display at the Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery February 1st -28th.
Working in a variety of mediums including acrylic, oil and encaustic, Georgeanne uses multiple layers of paints and glazes to summon dreamy, romantic images, rich in color and texture with an aged and atmospheric patina. She often works from photographs she takes while exploring the lush and dramatic mountains, rivers and bogs of the Adirondacks, as well as the waterways and wetlands of the Audubon sanctuary on Cape Cod. Her landscape paintings reveal intimate observations expressed in subtle shadows, dappled light and reflections on water, celebrating and initiating a dialogue about our relationship with the natural world.

Jeanne is known for her depictions of landscapes, farms, animals, and the natural world in general. Her work captures the essence of ordinary places and things which have been altered by time and the elements. For her, the “time making changes” effect is becoming more interesting than just a nostalgic approach. She finds the life in her subject matter that is the result of time shuffling the deck.
“I’m a wonderer,” she writes. “I wonder about stuff. The stuff we all perceive as the ordinary, the mundane, the familiar. Time has this strange effect of obfuscating it all, even as we are so sure of the stuff’s stability. Maybe I should be wondering about the nature of that dynamic we’ve named ‘time.’”
The paintings in Forever and a Day reflect Jeanne’s developing understanding of her subject matter. They are lighter, more abstract, less concerned with detail and more concerned with motion than with intent. They are markers of thoughts proceeding.
A slide show of the exhibit will be added to our website after the opening reception.

Bach Around Town is a series of six performances around Saranac Lake featuring the six Cello Suites by JS Bach performed by Esther Baker. Each concert will be performed in a different space including spaces not often utilized for musical performances. Each space is chosen for its environment; for acoustic properties, size, or as an invitation for the space to be used in a way in which it is not always engaged. Each performance will feature one of the cello suites by JS Bach performed by Esther, paired with another instrument presenting unaccompanied music. This is a unique opportunity for audiences to soak up an instrument in its purest sound without distraction of other sound palettes.
Seating is limited. $6 admission.

Finding True North
A History of One Small Corner of the Adirondacks
Fran Yardley
The Adirondack Artists Guild will host a book launch party from 5-7 pm on Friday, July 13, for Fran Yardley’s book, Finding True North: A History of One Small Corner of the Adirondacks, published by Excelsior Editions, an imprint of State University of New York Press. At 5:30, Fran will give a short talk and read from the book, which will be available for purchase and signing by the author that evening.
In 1968 Fran and Jay Yardley, a young couple with pioneering spirit, moved to a remote corner of the Adirondacks to revive the long-abandoned but historic Bartlett Carry Club, with its one thousand acres and thirty-seven buildings. The Saranac Lake–area property had been in Jay’s family for generations, and his dream was to restore this summer resort to support himself and, eventually, a growing family. Fran chronicles their journey and, along the way, unearths the history of those who came before, from the 1800s to the present. Offering an evocative glimpse into the past, Finding True North traces the challenges and transformations of one of the world’s most beautiful, least-celebrated places and the people who were tirelessly devoted to it.
Fran Yardley is a writer, actor, and nationally known storyteller and workshop leader. With her late husband, she renovated and managed the Bartlett Carry Club for sixteen years. In 1999 she cofounded Creative Healing Connections, a nonprofit organization offering retreats for women veterans and women with cancer and chronic illness. Originally from Buffalo, she is rooted into the shores of Middle Saranac Lake, where she lives with her actor/photographer husband, Burdette Parks, and her dog, Merlin.
The reception for Finding True North is open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
